Prosecution Rests In Gotti Brothers Trial

Defense to present case Tuesday; summations planned for Wednesday.

And on the fifth day in the federal money-laundering trial of Inc. heads Irv and Christopher Gotti, the government rested. But not before combing through page after page of carefully selected text-message exchanges between convicted crack dealer Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff and the Gotti brothers (real names Irving and Christopher Lorenzo) with New York Police Detective William Courtney — all within Judge Edward Korman's courtroom in Brooklyn on Monday afternoon (November 28).

Before Korman allowed the evidence, and away from the ears and eyes of the jury, both sides butted heads over the two-way transmissions. Defense attorney Gerald Shargel blasted the prosecution for drawing inappropriate inferences from the abbreviated text-message records provided by the Gottis' pager service. The company maintains transcripts of all text messages up to 80 characters, which means several of the messages read for the jury Monday afternoon weren't complete transmissions, but were short and often cut off in mid-sentence. It was also difficult — based on those records — to determine exactly who sent some of the messages or who they were intended for.

MTV's Mixtape Monday 11-29-05

DJ: Rhude

Representing: BK to VA

Mixtape: DJ Rhude and Kingz Nation Present: The Don Ferquan Show

411: Former You Hear It First artist Quan has been making headlines lately for a reason he hates: a run-in with the police. Last month he was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana and assault and battery on a police officer in his home state of Virginia after police busted into his hotel room.

Quan, who was introduced to the masses by Nas, says he's innocent and feels good about his impending case. "God's got me," he noted.

Although he maintains that everything between himself and God's Son is all love, he hasn't been waiting for Nas to hold his hand and walk him through the industry. After a bidding war, Quan signed to Atlantic and has been working for several months with the Heatmakerz, Red Spyda, L.E.S. and Trick Daddy, accumulating enough tracks for his album and a few mixtapes. There's even some talk that Kanye West might work on a song for Quan's debut LP, which is due in 2006.

Outkast's New Album Pushed Back Until At Least February

Soundtrack to "Idlewild" was supposed to drop in December.

Not too long ago, Outkast's Big Boi was working fans into a tizzy with talk of a December release for Idlewild, the soundtrack to the ATL duo's upcoming film and the first album of new 'Kast music in more than two years.

And while we still stick by our assertion that whatever Big Boi wants, Big Boi gets, perhaps he was getting a bit carried away with things. Because according to Outkast's label, LaFace Records, the earliest Idlewild will be seeing the light of day is now February.

But it's not like that's too surprising, considering that when MTV News caught up with Boi earlier this month at the Vibe Awards, he told us that the album wasn't even finished yet.

"We're about 75, 80 percent done with it. We're putting the finishing touches on it. Dre's in Atlanta right now working on it," he laughed. "There's like three potential singles right now, and we're trying to choose which one we're going to go with. When it comes out, you know it's going to be Outkast."

Benzino Hit With Tax Charges, Planning New Diss Track For Eminem/G-Unit

Raymond "Benzino" Scott, embattled co-owner of the Source Magazine, has been charged by the United States attorney's office in Massachusetts with failing to file tax returns in 1999 and 2000.

Scott plead innocent in a U.S. District Court to willful failure to file tax returns on Oct. 28. Scott is accused of not reporting an estimated $1.5 million in combined income from 1999 and 2000.
He was arraigned and freed on $10,000 unsecured bond.

"There was an extensive investigation into this matter," FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz told The Boston Herald. "We took a sweeping look at this individual. We were aware of the allegations of murder and everything else. This is what we came up with."

Marcinkiewicz would not speculate on whether Scott's tax charges are part of a larger probe in the Hip-Hop industry, but FBI sources told The Herald that the inquiry into Scott also examined his gang ties, which they claim were formed when he was a member of the rap group The Almighty RSO.

Nas Works With Primo / Calls 50 Cent Out

In Scratch Magazine's new January/February issue, on which he graces the cover with DJ Premier, God's Son revealed that he has begun work on a full-length album with the Gangstarr producer.

Contrary to public belief, Nas has already left Columbia Records and is presently looking for a new home.

Mr. Jones also took the opportunity to speak on 50 Cent, mentioning that the G-Unit general has never phoned him since he blew up back in 2003. The QB lyricist added that Fif keeps emulating Tupac, offering, "50 Cent's name will never be amongst the real niggas and that's killing him right now."

Busta Rhymes Cuts Dreads After 15 Years

After 15 years, Busta Rhymes has officially cut off his long dreadlocks.

Busta Rhymes, born Trevor Smith, cut off his trademark dreadlocks during a recent photo shoot in a New York barbershop.

“I started growing these sh--s in December '89. I was 17, Busta stated. “I signed my [record] deal and said I aint combing my hair no more. I don't have to."

The rapper now sports a short crop Caesar hairstyle.

In an effort to memorialize his transition, the former Leader of The New School member recorded the historic occasion on camera while friends and crew members watched.

The short video clip (located here: http://boss.streamos.com/wmedia/interscope/bustarhymes/video/cuts_his_dread.asx) features an excited Busta cutting his dreads off one at a time while he talks about the momentous event.
