MTV's Mixtape Monday - April 17th, 2006

Artist:
Proof

Representing:
Detroit

Mixtape:
Big Proof and Iron Fist Records Presents ... Hand 2 Hand

411:
If you go to Detroit, you can ask anyone about Motown rap and they'll tell you Proof was the mayor of the city's hip-hop scene. He worked quietly behind the scenes and helped up-and-coming artists like Trick Trick get signed, and you already know the history of how instrumental he was to Eminem. Despite his success, Proof was still reaching back to help others get on, literally until the day he died. Hand 2 Hand features an abundance of local talent that Proof was trying to not only shed light on, but bring together in a unified front.

Joints To Check For:

* "Forgive Me" remix featuring 50 Cent. The Dirty Dozen take the chorus from 50's old "Ghetto Koran" record and flip over Styles P.'s "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye" beat. D12 do what they always do: kick some of the most off-the-wall lyrics they can think of. Proof raps about coming from a dysfunctional family, Bizarre about being a crack head and "bad dad," both mumbling under their breath about their mothers. Kuniva even admits to lying to his momma.

CD1: 7 Tracks

R.I.P. Robert Davis Jr. aka DJ Screw (July 20, 1971 - Nov. 16, 2000)

"I'm screwed for life till the day I die. It's my style of music. At first people thought the tape deck was broke or the batteries was low or something. Shit, that's just how the music is. People caught on to it and people started loving it. When it's slowed down, you can hear the music and the lyrics better. The Way I be mixin and bringin it back and makin it repeat, I just be adding my talent in with the talent they already put into it. Make some platinium shit. I'm just tryin to promote every rapper that ain't gettin heard on the radio to the streets. That's where a nigga wants to reach is the streets."

Eminem Breaks Silence On Proof; Rapper's Lawyer Denies He Shot First

After two days of private mourning, Eminem broke his public silence late Thursday on the death of his best friend Proof, as the slain rapper's lawyer refuted police reports that he shot first in Tuesday morning's incident at Detroit's CCC Club.

"You don't know where to begin when you lose somebody who's been such a big part of your life for so long. Proof and I were brothers," Eminem said in a statement regarding the death of his D12 partner, longtime onstage hype man and closest friend. "He pushed me to become who I am. Without Proof's guidance and encouragement there would have been a Marshall Mathers, but probably not an Eminem and certainly never a Slim Shady. Not a day will go by without his spirit and influence around us all. He will be missed as a friend, father and both the heart and ambassador of Detroit hip-hop."

Though the focus since Tuesday's incident has been on reports from police that it was 32-year-old Proof (born DeShaun Holton) who fired first, shooting bouncer Keith Bender Jr. in the face before he was fatally shot by another man, Eminem encouraged fans to remember the life of Proof, not his death.

D12 rapper Proof killed in shooting at afterhours nightclub (*Update* BIZARRE ALIVE)

Rapper Proof of the rap group D12, one of the key figures on the Detroit hip-hop scene, was shot and killed this morning at an after-hours club on Eight Mile, police said.

Proof, whose real name is Deshaun Holton, was dead on arrival at Conner Creek Medical Center in Detroit, according to a spokeswoman for St. John Health System. He was 32.

Proof was among the most pivotal players in Detroit hip-hop, and revered as one of the battle rappers in the city -- the man who would handle anyone who dared to challenge him in a war of words. He befriended Eminem long before he was a houshold name, and was a nearly constant presence as the rapper rose to superstardom.

Proof was friends with many of the top Detroit hip-hop DJs, radio personalities, rappers and producers. A number of them were planning to gather with his family at the hospital this morning, including Eminem, Obie Trice and Marv Won from the Detroit group the Fat Killahz.
